Navigating the Labyrinth of Choice

The 7 of Cups & The Mental Tsunami: Why Choosing Freedom is Hard

Welcome back. This is my second time reflecting on the 7 of Cups here. Last time, I felt I made the right decision, but life intervened, and I couldn't maintain that path. Today, on my 4th post of this current cycle, I am back with more clarity.

In Tarot, the 7 of Cups is a card of illusion—a dizzying array of options, where the mind is so busy fantasising that it forgets to actually move forward. In the context of addiction, this is the "mental tsunami." It’s that moment when your brain, wired by previous habits, tricks you into thinking the "good times" of the past were real, while hiding the consequences.

Addiction is often a "loss of freedom of choice." We react to triggers rather than choosing our path. To reclaim that freedom, I am using a framework of seven actionable strategies. These are not just tips; they are cognitive tools to help you pause, reframe, and decide.

  • Acceptance (The Grounding): Acceptance isn't surrender. It’s acknowledging the urge as a feeling, not a command. It is the first step in "urge surfing"—letting the wave pass without being pulled under.

  • Distraction (The 15-Minute Rule): Cravings are physiological spikes; they peak and dissipate. Give yourself 15 minutes. By engaging in any activity that requires concentration—a puzzle, a walk, or reading—you break the neurological loop.

  • Run (The Physical Shift): If your environment is the trigger, you have to change your geography. Moving your body from a "high-risk situation" to a new space physically disrupts the urge.

  • Examine (The Thought Audit): Use this time to examine the thoughts feeding the craving. Are you catastrophizing? Are you mind-reading? Challenge those automatic thoughts.

  • Exercise (The Physiological Regulator): Exercise is the fastest way to flush stress hormones from your system. It provides the dopamine hit your brain is craving, but through a healthy, constructive pathway.

  • Mindfulness (The Ctrl+Alt+Delete): View the craving as a "shortcut" your body has learned. By stepping back and observing it without judgment, you stop being the object of the craving and become the observer of it.

  • Visualise (The Truth Check): Don't visualise the "buzz." Visualise the aftermath. The shame. The reset of your progress. Visualise the version of yourself you are building.

These techniques do work, but I won't lie to you, I will be smoking tomorrow. Today, inspired by the 7 of Cups, I choose to take a day off from my addiction. Just a reminder to myself of who is truly in control and the power of choice.
